| False Memories Art, music, and travel are the components of my passion. My work reflects emotions generated from a song layered with the memories of a place I have traveled, lived, or dream of going. In my work I try to capture this sensation by taking these fragments of memory and locating them in one place. During the process, memories are lost, misplaced, and reconstructed to become something new. They become “false” memories, not what was but what is now. This process results in work that is “true.” It is similar to creating my own folklore. Whereas folklore is verbal tales mine become visual tales. Even though the original story may be altered it is no less credible. This is what I'm focusing on in my art. Removed from all that I know, living as a minority learning a new language, customs, job, and even a lifestyle; I am able to focus on this “visual folklore” with a critical eye. My former life is now a memory. I've noticed that parts are missing, or perhaps I'm changing them. Either way, my life and work is becoming its own folklore. |
